2. Final Project

For this final project -Sub-titled, we're tasked to create a cinemagraph using mostly your own photographs edited and manipulated in Photoshop then animated. In addition, the images must have a visual or a conceptual theme.

Week 10: Idea Development

01. Firstly, we were tasked to write a biography about ourselves.

02. Then, we were instructed to write a statement about our own work.

03. We were then tasked to create a mood board to study & gather information for our theme.

Following that, we were tasked to sketch our work. Below are some of my sketches:

The aforementioned sketches were inspired by the mood board, that made a similar with collage. Both sketches mainly take inspiration from the statement and biography that were written. In addition to this, it was all centered on my preferences, including well-known landmarks and cuisines from around the world, that provided the atmosphere a magical and light ambiance.

After sketching, I decided to somewhat simulate what I had sketched as both of them were quite similar, with the exception of composition. To create the digital poster, I began by choosing pictures that was taken by my friend when we're visiting an art museum in Kuala Lumpur. Lastly, I ended up choosing the left's picture as I thought it was the most suitable for my concept and final product.

Then, I also obtain some images from the web and Pinterest as I needed pictures of the Eiffel tower, and the other travel-related items. Here are the pictures I had obtained including a camera, bubble tea, toast, macaron, ramen, and a polaroid of the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben.

With that, I proceeded to create my digital poster.

Both of the digital poster were designed in Adobe Photoshop and are quite similar excluding where the composition is placed and the size of the items. In order to match with my concept, I also added the 'dream clouds' as my background. In addition to this, I used the dodge tool to lighten myself to blend in with the background, which has pretty soft ambiance.

Week 12: Execution and Post Production

I preferred the image on the left as I thought that looked more natural. In addition to this, I resized my picture and gave it a softer colour blend because I felt that would go well with the theme.

Following that, I created the animation using Adobe After Effects and Premier Pro. In this animation, I decided to create a simple and straightforward aesthetic. Hence, I created animation by adding key frames to adjust position, rotation, scale, opacity etc. Below are the progress:

With the animation's completion, I then exported it as a.mov file and imported it into Premier Pro. I then inserted the food-related music I had downloaded to the video.

Finally, I came up with the final output.

-Final Animated Poster: Wonders -YouTube (4th Dec 2022)-

TITLE: Wonders

ARTIST STATEMENT: This self-titled is centered around universal cuisines and places. I chose the title ‘Wonders’ as the objects are something I am fascinated with.

The elements include food and national landmarks that I like a lot. Paris was a place that I visited when I was very young, so I don’t really have deep memories about it, hence it is my dream to go see the Eiffel Tower again in person. The main objective of this poster is to showcase the beauty of foreign treasures, whilst also strengthening my bond with them.

5. Reflection

Overall, I found that this project to be very eye-opening. First of all, it taught me how the importance of good lighting when it comes to taking the desired image. Without it, it'll make our work harder, so it's important to start with a high-quality image. Also, this project also gave me more confidence in my Photoshop skills. By using what I've learned throughout the past few weeks, I was able to achieve my desired outcome. Other than that, I found out that using Adobe After Effects is a complex thing to do, but once I became familiar with the workspaces and the tools, everything became simpler. Furthermore, I observed that watching many YouTube tutorial videos helped me a lot and gave me new tricks. All in all, this is a great attempt and exploration, not only exploring my own inner but also learning how to use more applications to make my artworks more complete and vivid.
