LECTURES
Week 10 | Briefing on Motion Comic
In this week's session, we were instructed to watch a pre-recorded video about the Motion Comic briefing provided by Mr Hafiz and given some websites as references. A motion comic (also known as an animated comic) is a form of animation that combines elements of print and animation. Individual panels are expanded into a complete shot while sound effects, voice acting, and animation are added to the original artwork. (Source: Wikipedia)
Animated scope:
1. Parallax (to create depth)
2. Secondary Action
3. Animated Background
Week 11 | Self-Directed Week
There are no classes this week. Ms Noranis and Mr Hafiz instructed us to keep working on our Task 3 Motion Comic and contact them for consultation. Besides that, Ms Noranis also mentioned that the progression on the comic, as well as the plan for the motion comic will be shown in classes next week.

Task 3: WebToon & Motion Comic
Each student are tasked to create a one shot Web Toon short with the premise of a FIGHT! genre story of creation. Consider 3-act structures but with interesting twists and plots and action pack scenes. It can be wordless and presented only with illustrations, or it can be detailed with stories, filled with speeches and texts. Think of creating a premise for a story that makes your readers creeped out, scared, and of course you can end the story on a happy note too! Use logline visuals to help establish your narrative.
Based on the webtoon you created in Task 3, you are to animate the visuals according to sequences and flow of the story. Consider timing and transitions of the visuals that strongly reflect the narrative through characters, panels, particle effects, texts etc. Timing is important! Too slow, your motion comic will be draggy and boring. Too quick, your animation won’t make sense. So timed the flow appropriately!
Notes:
- Must be published at webtoons.com
- Story must have 3-acts structure
- At least 60 panels - Max. 50 panels
- Illustrations (stick man drawing is not an illustration) can either be coloured or greyscale or screentone shaded render
- Content must be PG-13 and SAFE FOR WORK
- Comic panel (webtoon format) - W800 pxl x H1280 pxl
- Main Thumbnail size : W436 X H436 pxl
- Episode Thumbnail size : W160 X H151 pxl
Visual Research
To begin our task, we were instructed to write a summary of our story based on 3-Act Structure. Below is what I wrote for the summary:
Once upon a time, there lived a magical mermaid princess who protecting the ocean under the Atlantic Ocean. Her mission is to use the ocean power of a magical necklace to protect the ocean against destruction. Every day, she'll go to the shore and make friends, play cheerfully with the humans. However, there is a group of wicked pirates in the ocean who want to use the mermaid princess's magical necklace to take control of the entire ocean. The mermaid princess has several human friends and agrees with the human kingdom on the need to eradicate pirates.
02 Conflict
One day, the mermaid princess was caught by wicked pirates, and the magical necklace was ripped from her neck. Because of that, the ocean that had lost its magical protection suffered a catastrophic natural disaster and lost its vitality in an instant. Because of that, the human kingdom also began sending people and ships to seek the mermaid princess.
03 Resolution
Until finally, the human kingdom's prince leads the ships uncovered the pirates who kidnapped the mermaid princess. The prince's heroic stab and defeat of the wicked pirates in the ship battle also succeeded in the rescue of the mermaid princess and the recovery of the magical necklace. Since then, the mermaid princess and the human kingdom have successfully guarded and restored the ocean's vitality. The human kingdom's prince and the mermaid princess eventually live happily ever after.

Sketching Panels
After finishing the entire storyline, I started looking for the comic style I prefer. Then, I began to dissect the narrative and visualize how to attract the audience into the comic. Start with the story's setting, then get to the characters. I also used the methods we've taught to distinguish the foreground, midground, and background when sketching.
Digitisation Panels
I start digitising my sketches after completing all of the story panels. I then decided to build on my digital sketch and improve it to create a comic in the "sketchy style" that reflects the design's originality and rawness.

Animating Motion Video
To make the masking in Premier Pro easier, I separated the design parts before starting the animation process. I'm not sure whether this step is correct, but getting a general understanding of the parts I would like to animate in mind does help. Exploring the transitions and animation for each scene is a fun but challenging process.

REFLECTIONS
Experience
'An unforgettable fight scene' theme comic as our final project was a great chance to explore creating action through non-verbal communications. In the beginning, I thought a month may seem like a lot of time, and truth be told, I underestimated that. Making a comic is more challenging than I anticipated, especially when it comes to covey the concept through intricate drawings and motions. I struggled at first to come up with a good storyline and to begin with the panels sketches. Then, I started to focus on the concept and ideas that I wanted to convey, and keeping in mind 'Keep it simple'.
Observations
Besides that, I realised that finding a good reference is essential because you are only as good as your finest reference. Hence, I took my time to look up relevant sources and conduct several visual investigations that were beneficial. Throughout this process, I've encountered a wide variety of narrative and illustrative styles. It has widened my understanding of comics as I previously believed there to be just one type of comic and was unaware that there are other methods to tell a story. Moreover, the techniques and theories we have learned in the previous lectures are useful when developing comic art.
Findings
Throughout these tasks, I observed that each comic's layout and design are unique as they represent the ideology or passion of the creator. In addition to this, creating a comic requires a variety of new skills. First, in character development, body language, gestures, and facial expressions play a much greater role in communication than to do words alone. The word choice and speech bubble selection also contribute to catching the audience's attention and accentuating the emotion. Choosing the proper colour and tone contributes to the story's mood and as a result, makes the characters and important details stand out.
