REFLECTIONS
ExperienceThroughout this semester, I found that it was interesting as it allows us to learn new software including InDesign, Font Lab, etc. I also realised that reading additional books or resources and exploring the design's website has helped me to have a deeper understanding of typography. In the process of learning, I discovered that typography is not just about typeface and size, but also about kerning and tracking line length, alignment, space between the headers, and the body text. Typography is important because I have to make sure it is clear and visually appealing to the readers. Besides that, I've observed that typography plays an important role in connecting the idea and message even in small sizes. Choosing or designing the proper font and considering the size and readability, will give the viewers a better visual impression. Moreover, I realised that creating a typeface takes a lot of effort, study, patience, and observational abilities. It's not an easy task, and there are several technicalities to consider with. Therefore, it is important to be creative in exploring and experimenting with various ways to achieve the desired results.
Observations
It has been an interesting journey in the typography module throughout this semester. Typography is not hard to learn, yet it took me a great time and a lot of effort to go through all my tasks. We have to take notes for lectures and tutorials and at the same time, we have to do further reading. But this has enabled me to better understand typography and make sense of it. I could remember what I had learned better when I took notes and avoided having to watch the pre-recorded videos repeatedly. Self-discipline is essential, particularly while we're taking online classes. I discovered that the amount of time and effort we put through each task has a direct relationship with the outcomes. We had to effectively manage our time to complete tasks including updating our E-portfolio and taking notes from lectures recorded. In addition to this, getting the chance to complete this online course was a great advantage. I have improved my time management skills and become accustomed to a weekly "deadline" system. Truthfulness be damned, there were times when I was quite unsatisfied with the works that I'd done, but that's normal, we live and learn.
Findings
Throughout this semester, I have gained more knowledge and developed vital abilities that are essential in typography. With the creation of our E-portfolio, I frequently update it with the creative process of the exercises and tasks that were assigned. We started our tasks with sketching and throughout the module, it was proven to be highly helpful for better designs. It assisted with concept generation and the subsequent process of digitisation as it was a component of practically all of our initiatives. In addition to this, I discovered that learning through theories is insufficient. We must be able to incorporate them into our designs and improve our capacity for element analysis. I also observed that reading additional books or resources and exploring the design's websites has helped me to have a deeper understanding of typography, which necessities creativity and technical skills. In this module, I also learned how crucial attention to even the smallest details, including size, font, kerning, and tracking, can be in generating a higher work. Paying closer attention to details is incredibly beneficial while producing high-quality work.
