REFLECTIONS
Experience
Advanced typography was tough but it is more enjoyable than typography. Typography contributed more as an introduction to the field of typography. In advanced typography though, we get to express our concepts and ideas. We have fewer restrictions and greater freedom to go around. Being able to choose the topic greatly motivates me to complete the task and approach it as something I want to accomplish rather than something I have to do. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience as I learned about a new field of design that I enjoyed. In addition to this, learning about typography was very useful as it enhances my work in other areas.
Observations
Overall, I do believe this module has helped me understand more about myself and my interest in design. I gained a basic understanding of how these systems are being used in the layouts of magazines, books, and other publications through the exercises of the typographic system. Working on the Type & Play exercises taught me to find inspiration from unconventional places as they can provide unique perspectives. For task 2, we are allowed to explore and select the theme we preferred. It was a great chance to identify our style and discover our future interest areas. In task 3, I learned how essential it is to pay attention to even the smallest details, including size, font, kerning, and tracking to achieve better work.
Findings Time management was a valuable takeaway from this module as the project task is heavier than the previous one. We had to track our progress while enhancing the design parts. Besides that, we need to behave critical thinking skills to evaluate the work we did. It is also crucial to read more about design-related topics and pay attention to the design industry to advance and keep up with current trends. In addition to this, we should always work more self-driven work in our free time and read, watch, and listen to gain more input. Inspiration does not appear out of thin air; we cannot create something we have never seen. We can only learn new ideas from other people and our surroundings through observation and learning.
