Week 1 Practical

1. Bezier Game

The Bezier Game was a tonne of fun and extremely educational for someone who hasn't mastered the Pen tool. I was frustrated the first time I tried to get used to the controls as I wasn't really understand how to utilise the controls or when to use the Alt key. However, I had myself sit down one afternoon and try to complete the game in one sitting. The second time I played, it was tremendously enjoyable and I realized the true power of something that seems simple, yet complex. The Bezier Game is a game where the more you play, the more you learn and discover easier ways to complete the outline. It proved to be an exciting brain challenge in the end!

4. List down your 3 favourite graphic design work from Pinterest. Explain why you like the designs.

Design 01:

Figure 1.2 Travel boardens in mind by Alyona Vorotnikova (2nd Sep 2022)

Personally, this image was caught my attention as I scrolled through Pinterest. Alyona Vorotnikova created this artwork under the heading "travel broadens the minds." In this artwork, the usage of brighter colors like blue and pink in comparison to the darker more muted black and brown was very intriguing to take in. In addition of this, the use of chiaroscuro in the scenario and characters make this artwork appear more lively. Overall, this piece of art is dynamic and gives off a sense of travel.

Design 02:

Figure 1.3 Yakult Poster (2nd Sep 2022)

Compared to other drinks posters, the above poster is more aesthetically pleasing to me. The layout of the Yakult promotional poster and the usage of drink splashes throughout the graphic provide it a gentle vibe. The words and icons surrounding the bottle take up space nicely and frames the bottle. Besides, the way the words are typeset, in addition to the colors and typefaces, makes them easier for viewers to read. It's an innovative poster that gives me a refreshing, attractive feeling.

Design 03:

Figure 1.4 'Cityscape' collage artwork by Andy Burgess (2nd Sep 2022)

A combination of clippings, photos or small objects onto a surface, which is what I find intriguing about this artwork. It was a collage artwork titled "cityscape" that was produced by Andy Burgess. The various colour and contrast in this piece of art are vibrant and match the scene. Furthermore, the layout is made more appealing by the different colours and textures of the various buildings and vehicles. As a whole, the artwork is distinctive and it inspires creativity in me.

For our practical this week, we are learned how to use the lasso, pen and layering tools. To begin, we were instructed to download the folder provided before trying out marquee tools.

Figure 2.1 Images for Practical (9th Sep 2022)

Mr Martin then demonstrated how to draw a border around the table and place it in the 'living space' image using three different lasso tools & pen tools. Following that, we learned how to use brushes to create a shadow beneath the tables, how to resize and layer images as well as add an effect (Gaussian blur) to remove noise from the image.

Figure 2.3 Inserting isolated objects and adding shadows in 'living space' images (9th Sep 2022)

We didn't have class this week as it was a public holiday. We were instructed to follow the slides or watch the YouTube video to understand how to use a few tools in Adobe Photoshop. We were then given two images: a Shazam poster & the interior of Hearst Mansion.

Figure 3.1 Images for Practical (16th Sep 2022)

To begin, I remove the background from Shazam image using quick selection tool and mask the selection afterwards. Then, I pasted the isolated Shazam into the Hearst Mansion image and resized it to create a realistic sense of scale. Next, I adjust the colour correction in 'match colour' option which allowed for Shazam to blend in more naturally. I then create a shadow, apply gaussian blur effect and reduce the opacity of the shadow layer. Following that, I duplicated the Shazam layer to create the reflection and used Hue/Saturation & Brightness/Contrast to correct the colour.

Week 4 Practical

Recolouring Black and White 01:

In this week's practical, well learned how to use the brush, layer & fill in colour feature in Adobe Photoshop. We were given a portrait of Norman Lindsay, and Mr Martin guided us through the process of recolouring it step by step.

Figure 4.1 Images for Practical -Norman Lindsay (23rd Sep 2022)

I began by selecting a colour and using the brush tool to apply it to the entire skin. Then, I apply the soft light blending mode and adjust the colour layer's opacity and hue/saturation. The same process are repeated in colouring the hair, lip, eyes, eyebrow, coat & background. Some refinements are made using the eraser tool to make them more suited.

Recolouring Black and White 02:

Following that, we were tasked to recolouring Black & White image using a different technique. We're given a video tutorial and slides of the task, and then instructed to recolour a given Black & White photo. In addition to the B&W photo, two additional pictures are provided to us as references of skin and hair colour.

Figure 4.4 Images for Practical (23rd Sep 2022)

Figure 4.5 Hair & Skin Reference (23rd Sep 2022)

To begin, I selected skin and hair colour with marquee tool. Highlight, midtone & shadow colours are extracted using the eyedropper tool, while the brush tool is used to apply the colours to different layers. Then, I used the quick selection tool to select the hair and the refine brush tool in the 'Select & Mask' option to further refine it. After refining, I selected the output to Layer Mask and applied it to the solid colour layer with soft light blending mode. The same process are repeated for recolouring the skin, lips, coat & background. Hue/saturation adjustment layer is used to make some adjustments to the skin's colour.

We're given a task on Double Exposure during this week's practical. To begin, we're instructed to download the practise image and watched the provided video tutorial.

Figure 5.1 Images for Practical (30th Sep 2022)

I began by select the portrait image using magic wand tool and click 'select subject' and 'select and mask' options. Then, I used the refine edge brush tool to brush the hair and eyelashes. Following refinement, I selected the output to 'select layer with layer mask' and applied it to the solid colour layer. I then created a curve adjustment layer and selected clipping mask to increase contrast for portrait layer.

Following that, I added and repositioned the forest image, selected clipping mask and added to the mask layer. I then chose brush tool, foreground colour black to unmask her face. Two birds' images were added with the darken/multiply blending mode to remove white background. Lastly, I added a gradient map fill layer and reduced the opacity.

Week 6 Practical

In this week's practical, we're given a task on Displacement Map. To begin, we're instructed to download the practise image and followed the instructions in practical class.

Figure 6.1 Images for Practical (7th Oct 2022)

I started by converting the image to black & white, applying gaussian blur effect, then saving it as a PSD file. In another photoshop file, the image's object was then placed to the object. Following that, I converted the object to a smart object, displaced it, and closed the layer visibility. I then used the quick selection tool to select the image's object and applied a mask to it. Lastly, I drag the image's object underneath the displace layer, blend the object layer and create a clipping mask to it.

In this week's practical, we'll learned how to use the healing tool set in Adobe Photoshop, which includes the spot healing brush tool, healing brush tool, patch tool and content-aware move tool. We were given three images and Mr Martin guided us through the process step by step.

Figure 7.1 Images for Practical (14th Oct 2022)

To begin, I duplicated the layer of images and applied each healing tool's function. Firstly, the spot healing brush tool used to remove unwanted spots or small objects from an image. The healing brush tool corrects slight imperfections in an image. Besides, the patch tool used to retouch photos and it classified under the spot healing brush group because they have similar functions. The content-aware move tool allows to choose an element to transfer from one photo to another, placing it seamlessly so that it looks like it naturally belongs.

Following that, Mr Martin guided us on how to transform one's into cyborg. We first touched up our portrait using the healing brush tool and adjusting the brightness. Then, we sketched the shapes/outlines with the pen tool to create the robot effect with the brush tool. The paths were then all highlighted and converted into brush strokes. Next, the outlines are selected out and masked out. The cyborg photos were then imported to the portrait. In order to improve the inner shadow effect's realism, we adjusted Bevel & Emboss.

During this week's practical, we were introduced to a new software - Adobe After Effects, which is used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture composition. Mr Martin provided a thorough explanation of the workspace and the animation process. We were then given a Photoshop file to create our own motion graphic artwork. We created animation by adding key frames to adjust position, rotation, scale, opacity etc.

Parallax

We started by cropping out the objects using the quick selection tools and masking them out. We're then using the content-aware tool to remove the object from background and convert them into smart object. In order to create the animation effect, we selected the video timeline of the timeline animation and applied keyframes to the transform layer.

GIF

Following that, we learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to create a GIF. In order to remove the objects from the background, we used the content-aware tools to separate the character from it. Then, we created a GIF by using the frame animation in the timeline animation. We selected one of the frames and apply the "puppet warp" to the character's layer, then modify some of the movement arcs.

Figure 10.5 GIF Animation (4th Nov 2022)

In this week's practical, we learned how to animate a motion graphic in Adobe After Effects. To begin, we separated the layers of photo in Photoshop and imported it into After Effects. Then, we converted each layer into a three-dimensional (3D) layer that was able to moved. The next step was to open the camera and select a horizontal or vertical perspective.

On the beginning of the parallax effect, we then created keyframes in several layers. In order to give the effect a more animated feel, we also add additional movements to layers, such as puppet tool. Besides that, we selected a part of the video, masked and placed it on the girl to create a mist in the parallax effect.
